Are you looking to sightsee or climb Mt. Fuji around the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station~ Well, you've come to the right place! I will be sharing the must-see things at the 5th station and also the newest updates on climbing Mt. Fuji.
Sightseeing Around the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station
If you are looking to sightsee around the Mt. Fuji area or to be more specific the 5th Station, there are plenty of must-see places and things to do all year round! However, please note that under extreme weather conditions, the roads leading up towards the 5th station are subject to closure. The new restrictions put into place in 2024 do not impact any sightseeing activities surrounding the 5th Station.
As you may already know, Yamanashi Prefecture offers spectacular views of Mt. Fuji at the 5th Station Large Observatory Square and various activities for tourists to enjoy in peace away from the bustling city. If climbing Mt. Fuji is too intense but you still want to get some exercise done, then you would be delighted to know that there is an easy one-way trail circling around the 5th station area. It takes approximately around 70 minutes to hike around with a great viewpoint of Mt. Fuji whilst getting a close-up of the plants and wildlife in the area. This Ochudo trail is different to the four trails leading up Mt. Fuji and doesn’t require any additional fees. After coming all the way up to the 5th station, why not take this chance to further explore the nature, local shrine, and try the regional specialities here. If you're adventurous, you can even go horse riding around this area during the summer season.
Shops & Restaurants
Built-in the style of a log cabin, you can indulge in the iconic Mt. Fuji-shaped melon bread here or Mt. Fuji-shaped curry rice! The Rest House serves as both a place to stay overnight or to feed any hungry travellers looking for a hearty meal – Gogoen Rest Houses serves Yamanashi’s regional specialities including the gogome waraji bento, yoshida udon, or Yamanashi’s speciality houtou. You have a selection of different Nabe (hot pot style) and bento-style meals to choose from. Yamanashi Prefecture serves a much more unique type of udon which is chewier and thicker than your usual udon across Japan; it’ll surely give you that much-needed boost of energy especially if you’re planning to make the trek up Mt. Fuji! As for souvenirs, there is a wide selection of confectionery goods, Mt. Fuji-themed arts and crafts, Japanese-style stamp, a walking stick, Mt. Fuji tapestry and even retro Mt. Fuji illustrated sake. On the 3rd floor of Rest House, there is a Fuji Volcano Arts and Science Museum for those keen to learn about the history and geology of Mt. Fuji; there are various exhibits including the Hokusai (The Great Wave), wildlife and alpine plants to see.

Komitake Shrine
The Komitake shrine has been worshipped as a guardian deity watching over the safety of climbers. Come collect the unique Goshuin stamp at this shrine, or if you haven’t already, then maybe it’s time to start your journey and purchase a Goshuin stamp book. If you walk behind the shrine, you will see a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji. Furthermore, the Kaizan festival is held every year on the 1st July at this shrine to mark the beginning of the climbing season. Don't miss out on this unique event where you can witness a purification ceremony in action with your very own eyes. During this event, participants carry a Mikoshi shaped like Mt. Fuji through the shrine and around the 5th station. Why not take a visit to this shrine before your climb~
Climbing Mt. Fuji
As the home of Mt. Fuji, Yamanashi Prefecture attracts a steady influx of tourists annually amid Japan's booming tourism industry. The Yoshida Trail remains one of the popular routes climbers take to ascend Mt. Fuji. The Yoshida Trail, which includes the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station, is in Yamanashi Prefecture, while the remaining three trails are in Shizuoka Prefecture. As of 2024, new restrictions and fees have been introduced taking into consideration climbers' safety and preventing overnight climbing. Now, the updated fees and restrictions will be outlined in the following:
Newest Update:
Climbing Season: 1st July - 10th September
Hiking Fee: 4,000 yen
Mt. Fuji 5th Station Gate Closure on the Yoshida Trail: 14:00 - 3:00
Number of Climbers per day: 4,000
Please note that the hiking fee can be paid on the day, granted the number of climbers has not exceeded the daily cap of 4,000, however, making reservations prior to your visit via the official Mt. Fuji website is recommended but reservations made on the day is now possible. Once you pay the hiking fee, you will receive a wristband showing proof of payment on-site and you can pass through the gate; payment can be made with cash.
※Climbers with reservations at mountain huts are granted access to pass regardless of gate closure or the daily climbing limit. Please also note that reservations for mountain huts are separate from this fee, whether you book a mountain hut or not is at your own discretion.
Access
You can get to the 5th Station by the Fuji Subaru Line which is a toll road leading from the northern slopes of Mt. Fuji. It is generally accessible almost all year round unless under severe weather conditions. However, it is closed to private vehicles during most of the climbing season - but don't worry, shuttle buses operate from the designated car parks between the base and the 5th station - easily accessible from Fujikawaguchiko Station or Mt. Fuji Station.
Beware of crowds during Obon (Japanese holiday) and weekends- so plan ahead! The temperatures are fairly mild around this area, so keep yourself warm and climb safely.
