Sasago Oiwake Puppet Theater, located in Yamanashi Prefecture’s Otsuki City, holds beautiful puppet shows not to be missed. Sasago’s history of puppeteering traces back 300 years ago, when a traveling puppet theater troupe from modern day Tokyo shared their knowledge with the Sasago locals. For many generations, this art has been passed down through the Amano family. Thanks to their hard work, the Sasago Oiwake Puppet Theater was designated as an “Intangible Folk-Cultural Property” in Yamanashi.
For those who are interested in traditional and regional arts, Sasago Oiwake Puppet Theater provides a beautiful look into the traditional world of puppeteering, through the use of intricately designed puppets manned by skilled puppet masters.
