Riding a bicycle on an uphill course on mountains and hills is a race against time.In order to climb against gravity, it is important to have muscular strength and reduce the weight of your equipment including the bicycle itself.
Compared to racing on flatlands where you often ride in groups, the time difference based on your ability in climbing uphill is more significant, so hill-climbing is popular as a competition where you can ride at your own pace with little risk of contact with other bicycles. The greatest charm of this sport lies in the sense of accomplishment and uplift that you get after reaching the top of a high mountain.
There are many courses and many competitions nationwide, but among them "Fuji-no-Kuni Yamanashi Mt. Fuji Hill Climb", "All Japan Mountain Cycling in Norikura", "Maebashi Mt. Akagi Hill Climb" and "Haruna-san Hill Climb in Takasaki" are said to be the four most popular hill-climbing Competitions.

Is it all right for anyone to attempt this sport?
Yes, anyone who can ride a bicycle can attempt this sport. Competition age ranges from juniors to those in their 60s, and female competitors are increasing year by year. However, you need a certain amount of leg strength to finish the race. There are many curves and downhill road can make your bike to travel at a considerable speed, so beginners should avoid challenging without any practice. Furthermore, since the brake should be applied continuously when you travel downhill, it will severely exhaust your grip strength. So it is better to take up the challenge after practicing beforehand, even if it is just on a course around your home.
I'm still a beginner. May I enter a competition?
Yes, you may enter a competition. Among various competitions, "Fuji-no-Kuni Yamanashi Mt. Fuji Hill Climb" is suitable for beginners because it has a high rate of participants reaching the finish line. However, participation under insufficient sleep and poor physical conditions is strictly prohibited. Hill-climbing accidents are mostly caused by excessive speed when traveling downhill. Please do not push yourself and make sure to take frequent breaks by stopping at the left side of the road that is safe and has good visibility. Also, since the temperature difference between the finish line and the starting line is quite high, be sure to take precaution by bringing protective wear for cold weather to be used when traveling downhill.
