There, you can enjoy the exhilarating feeling and the speedy sensation when you run with all your might, all the way through the great nature, and the sense of accomplishment that you will surely feel when you reach the finish line.
When you run through natural mountain path, you need to have some hiking knowledge, such as behaving in a considerate manner to protect the surrounding environment, traveling together in a group of at least 2 people when entering the mountain area, and knowing the weather forecast beforehand.
There are many trail running courses in Japan, where about 70% of the land comprises of mountainous areas, and many runners have participated in the competitions held throughout the country in recent years. "Japan Mountain Endurance Race", also called Hasetsune Cup, is one such competition.
How is trail running different from marathon?
The first is the difference between paved road and unpaved trail (mountain path). There is a huge appeal in running through trails where you can see a variety of scenery that is different from the one you can see on the road. Since it involves running on a rugged mountain path, attention must be paid to where and how you step on to prevent injuries such as sprains. It is good to prepare specially made shoes that match your feet. When you are going to run through nature, prior investigation and planning are more important than when you run on paved roads. In addition to physical condition management and weather forecasting, it is also necessary to wear clothing in anticipation of mountain weather that is prone to change, and prepare your supplies such as food and water. Furthermore, trail running courses are often overlapped with areas designated for the preservation of nature, such as national parks, so please do not run in places not along the designated course.
Is it all right for anyone to attempt this sport?
Yes, anyone who can hike may attempt this sport. The age of runners ranges from youngsters to seniors, and there are female runners as well. You can start by walking in the mountains and try running little by little. Choose to walk again if you feel too exhausted to run. Once you get used to running on mountain path, try attempting to finish a short course.
I'm still a beginner. May I enter a competition?
Yes, you may enter a competition. It is popular because you can aim for clear goals in terms of time and distance, and you can run with your friends. As the distance of the course varies depending on the competition, you should start with a short course. If you can reach the finish line, you can then attempt the longer course.
